- For the post-scratch version of this character, see Mituna Captor (post-scratch).
Mituna Captor is a gold blooded troll who lived on Beforus shortly before he and the rest of his session caused the Reckoning.[2]
He is the Heir of Doom and the dancestor of Sollux Captor.
Concept and creation[]
Andrew Hussie describes Mituna as a “Mega Man Sollux”[3]; Sollux' themes on the Toby Fox albums Alternia and AlterniaBound both use samples from the soundtracks of the Mega Man series,[citation needed] possibly leading to Mituna's helmet borrowing from the Mega Man character's iconic design. His helmet also bears more than a passing resemblance to that worn by the Mother 3 character Claus; more broadly, his wearing of a helmet references his post-scratch moniker, the "Helmsman".
While Openbound's Bubblr gimmick broadly parodies the microblogging platform Tumblr, where much of Homestuck's readership was based at the time, Mituna's speech is uniquely styled in a way resembling the YotsubaB style found on some 4chan boards; 4chan's Comics and Cartoons (or /co/) board also used to host a devoted section of the Homestuck fanbase. Mituna's personality fits with many stereotypes of 4chan users as lewd and abrasive.
Alongside the deaf Meulin Leijon and mute Kurloz Makara, the idealistic Mituna could be seen as one of the proverbial three wise monkeys who "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil".
Mituna borrows his title of Heir from the Beta troll Equius Zahhak; this forms part of a chain of class swaps, with the A1 session having an Heir of Doom, Page of Void, Mage of Heart and Rogue of Breath, while the post-scratch session has a Mage of Doom, Heir of Void, Page of Breath and Rogue of Heart.
Etymology[]
Mituna was a name suggested by Archaemic for Sollux. It comes from "Mithuna", the Sanskrit name given to the Indian astrological sign corresponding with Gemini; "mithuna" is a couple engaged in Tantric union (or "maithuna"), as opposed to a pair of twins as in the West, possibly lending to Mituna's lewd personality.
Biography[]
Mituna was one of the players in the “three sweeps” long[citation needed] A1 session; it is unknown if Mituna ascended to the god tiers during this time, a fact of which he himself seems uncertain.[4] As with the rest of their team, he was killed by Meenah Peixes to ensure that they "survived" in the form of ghosts in the Furthest Ring instead of being completely wiped out by the scratch's reset. Aranea gives a short biography of him:
- “The Heir of Doom was once a powerful psionic. [...] He had much to say when it came to warning us a8out the path of doom and destruction we were all headed for, 8ut no one took him very seriously. 8ut one day he lost all those abilities when he 8adly overexerted himself. It's hard to get any specifics from him, 8ut indications are that he applied every last 8it of energy he had toward some great act of heroism, saving us all from some looming threat. Not only did his exertion permanently 8urn out his psychic a8ilities, 8ut it left him somewhat... er. Incoherent. [...] The entire incident is shrouded in mystery. From his limited and scattered accounts of what happened, it seems very likely that Kurloz was with him at the time, as the only eye witness. And of course it's impossi8le to get any relia8le information out of him. I guess we may never know, sadly.”
Mituna's accident and subsequent brain damage mirror his life across the scratch, as well as the life of his dancestor; all three Captors were forced to save one or more of their peers through a great exertion of their psionic abilities, at a great physical and psychic cost. While it is not at all clear what the Beforan Mituna's sacrifice entailed, it may well have involved moving a craft at high speed as with the Condesce's flagship and Sollux' meteor.
Personality and traits[]
Like his dancestor, Sollux, Mituna has a dual personality, which was either caused or worsened by the brain damage he suffers from. He alternates between an aggressive, abrasive mood, employing foul language such as anti-seadweller slurs when talking to Meenah and Cronus Ampora, and a meek, passive, apologetic self, in which he is too timid and chooses not to defend himself against Cronus' verbal bullying. He doesn't like being touched by strangers (or maybe just Cronus) and will completely freak out until they let go.[citation needed] He occasionally goes through fits where he rapidly swaps between moods.
Also like Sollux, Mituna dreamed on the moons of both Prospit and Derse, possible alluded to by Mituna's proximity to a dream bubble set depicting a half-gold and half-purple bridge.[image?]
Mituna skateboards like his matesprit Latula. In order to counter his own clumsiness, he wears a bulky helmet with a dual-color visor reminiscent of Sollux's glasses. He also wears a tight yellow and black bodysuit that matches Latula's outfit. Under his helmet, he sports messy hair that covers his eyes. Mituna likes slam poetry, which he tried to show Cronus before he interrupted him by breaking his skateboard.[citation needed]
Relationships[]
Latula Pyrope[]
Mituna has been in a matespritship with Latula for eons.[citation needed] The two wear matching bodysuits and partake in similar "rad" interests like gaming, skateboarding and 1337 speak; where Mituna's theme music is a variation on the GameBro theme ♫, Latula's is the GameGrl theme ♫.
Kurloz Makara[]
Kurloz is Mituna's moirail, and is theorized by Aranea to have been the sole witness to Mituna's incident.[citation needed] Cronus spreads rumors that the symptoms of Mituna's brain damage disappear when he talks Kurloz, no doubt thanks to Kurloz' chucklevoodoos.[citation needed]
Cronus Ampora[]
While Cronus hints[citation needed] that the two were friends before the accident, Mituna is now more often than not a target for Cronus' harassment.[citation needed]
