The Land of Heat and Clockwork (LOHACHS) is Dave Strider's planet in The Medium. It is a land covered by a lava ocean, with industry rising above from metallic scaffolding.

Concept and creation[]

Clockwork is a transparent reference to Dave's Time aspect, while heat can be taken as alluding to both the aspect's destructive nature and to Dave's broader association with the element of fire. The presence of amber underlings on the planet connects Dave to the piece of amber found in the first iteration of Can Town, just as the other three items connect to John Egbert, Rose Lalonde and Jade Harley.

Geography[]

Lohac

The land is characterized by steel framework, spinning cogs, and lots of lava. Beat Mesa, the device able to initiate the scratch, dominates the orbital view of the planet, floating above a large barren lava lake.

Habitation[]

LOHAC2

The native inhabitants of the Land of Heat and Clockwork are crocodile consorts, and its denizen is the blacksmith Hephaestus

Dave encountered many underlings here, including Amber and Rust Imps, Basilisks, Sulfur Ogres, and a Ruby Giclops.

The Land of Heat and Clockwork corresponds to the third planet in Can Town. After WV is locked inside his Sburb base, his drawing of the planet is slit in two, seemingly foreshadowing the scratching of Beat Mesa.

Dave arrived here after his egg was hatched by his seppucrowsprite. Dave's apartment remained atop its highrise, though the floors below his were replaced with a steel framework.

Dave's Bro and Jack Noir had their first duel on LOHAC at the Beat Mesa at some point. The planet is also the resting place of the legendary sword (or Legendary Piece of Shit as Dave calls it) Caledfwlch, a weapon that the planet's denizen, Hephaestus, is obsessed with. However, other than the Caledfwlch the planet itself does not seem to be under any of the same denizen-caused duress seen on the other planets. Whether this means Hephaestus's influence on LOHAC is minimal, or that Dave skipped his planet's quests, is unclear.

Dave entered his First Gate around the same time that the Reckoning started. He met his crocodile consorts, who began cooking him with vegetables for whatever reason. Soon Dave began his manipulation of the LOHAC Stock Exchange (LOHACSE), which is, as the name implies, a stock exchange system on the Land of Heat and Clockwork. Through the use of time travel, Dave gained a complete monopoly on the stock exchange and gained over a septillion Boondollars. Dave later states that he is uncertain of the eventual fate of the Stock Exchange after he ransacked it.

Later Rose arrived at the planet with her complacency to prepare for the scratch, of which she did not yet know the true nature. She soon went Grimdark and left to get revenge on Jack Noir for murdering her Mom. John Egbert came to the planet soon afterwards with her Quills of Echidna to initiate the scratch, and faced off against the planet's most powerful underlings.

Jade Harley shrinks the planet, along with the others, with her recently gained god tier powers and takes them beyond the reach of the scratch, where they orbited inside the Battleship in the 3 year journey towards the B2 kids' session.

Upon the arrival of LOCAH and the other B1 planets to the new session, they were placed on orbit around that session's Skaia. After Dave travels back to his planet with the Wayward Vagabond, he enters his old house and talks to himself about his memories and old interests, he then rummages through some things and finds some of his old "ironic selfies," which he unironically laughs at before John catches him on the act.

Though John leaves not long afterwards, as the newly made Grimbark Jade is hot on his trail, and just as the Heir leaves, the Witch arrives, and takes the opportunity to discuss with Dave The Batterwitch's plans for him to slay Lord English with a legendary weapon. However, when the "legendary weapon" turns out to just be a downgraded version of his old sword, he goes on a tirade where he calls his quest a "STUPID PIECE OF GARBAGE QUEST for LAME SHITTY LOSER FUCKHEADS WHO SUCK BALLS WHILE CRAPPING THEIR PANTS."

Jade then urges him to fight her using his time travel powers, which he refuses to do as he swore off to never use them again, which leads into a huge argument that ends with the Witch throwing the Mayor off the bulding, though luckily Dave manages to catch him just before he falls into the lava and flies off somewhere else, while Jade laments as to why is being a bad guy so hard.

Dave then places the Vagabond back in his house after Jade leaves, and is soon called by Karkat Vantas, who orders him to go to the Land of Frost and Frogs, which Dave does after giving the Mayor one last kiss on the cheek.

After the events of GAME OVER, the planet suffered serious damage in its collision with the Land of Crypts and Helium in the battle between the Condesce and Aranea Serket, with it's remains drifting in the wasteland that used to be the B2 session before being consumed by the stardust glitches. After the retcon, the planet stayed intact as Aranea's plan never came into fruition, and it's last seen with the other planets spewing thousands of multicolored Grist units towards Skaia to assist in the creation of the Genesis Frog.
