The Land of Crypts and Helium (LOCAH[1]), is Jane Crocker's planet in the Medium. It is a cave-filled land devoid of almost all life save for helium-filled seed pods ascending into the sky.

Concept and creation[]

The planet shares themes of burial and death with the rest of the Nobles' planets, and as such is also closely connected with one noble gas.

Geography[]

It is a desolate planet, devoid of life except for some flowers that seem to be growing from cracks and crevices. All trees on the planet are completely dead.

Habitation[]

It was once home to the Salamanders, such as those that inhabited the Land of Wind and Shade, but they died long ago in relation to the time that Jane makes her way into the Medium. They were instructed by their Denizen Hemera to stop preparing for Jane's arrival, as it would not come in their lives, and instead build their own graves (the "Crypts"). The "Helium" aspect of the planet comes from the large seed pods that grow into balloon-like objects which are filled with helium and then sent off with hopes that they will reach Skaia. The planet shares themes with the rest of the sessions' planets of burial places and noble gases, representative of the dead end/inert nature of their session. When Jane arrives in the Medium, her house lands on one of the balloons, but it soon sinks into the ground beneath the planet.

The Seed Pods scattered throughout the planet have two purposes. They water the planet in hopes of feeding new life and assisting the dead planet in blossoming again. There is indeed much plant life under the surface of the planet, but it seems to be unable to survive on the surface. Their second purpose, according to legend, allows them to make wishes come true. If a wish is carved into a Seed Pod, and the Seed Pod reaches Skaia, the wish would be made true. In this planet's introduction flash, Jane carves a poorly drawn picture of Jake.

LOCAH also appears to contain scarab beetles as a totem animal, just as John's planet, the Land of Wind and Shade, contained fireflies and Jade's planet, the Land of Frost and Frogs, contained hummingbirds. These totem animals of John and Jade surrounded them when they died on their Quest Beds and ascended into Godhood. Jane's scarab beetles probably would have surrounded her had she died on her Quest Bed (assuming she has one), and ascended to Godhood; however, as was stated by both Calliope and Caliborn, the Alpha Kids were only able to use their Quest Crypts on Prospit and Derse to ascend.

History[]

Several tablets are scattered across the planet that prophecize the arrival of Jane, the Maid of Life. They do not call her a "Hero", but rather a "Noble", as Nobles become martyrs or toil in endless futility. They have also prophecized that the light of Hope (Jake) will already have been snuffed out, which is evident in the lanterns the reader uses to navigate through the Act 6 Act 3 flash. The lanterns also prophecize that the Nobles of Heart and Void will also have their lights snuffed out, and that they will not be able to finish their quest to hear the Vast Croak without the arrival of the four gods (John Egbert, Rose Lalonde, Dave Strider, and Jade Harley). By utilizing the lanterns and Lil' Sebastian, Jane travels around the planet collecting the skulls of a salamander, turtle, crocodile, and iguana to unlock the door to a room called the "Maid's palace" - a direct referencePS icon to a skull puzzle in Jane's favorite webcomic Problem Sleuth (which is itself a reference to basically the same puzzleJB icon in Jailbreak).

While Jake's lantern was already dark (possibly because his dream self was already dead), the state of the other lanterns seems to be connected to the state of their waking selves. After JaneHS and RoxyHS's waking selves are killed by the Red Miles and Dirk is knocked outHS, Jane and Roxy's lanterns go dark, while Dirk's lantern goes dimHS. Dirk's lantern lights up againHS after Aranea uses her powers to awaken himHS, then went completely dark again off-screen (probably when his waking self died in Synchronize), then grew extremely bright and explodedHS when Dirk was revived. When the alpha kids reached the god tiers, the lantern shrine flashed brightly with all of their colors and then explodedHS.

After five months of fooling around in their null session, and going through some teen drama on the day before her birthday, Jane absconds back to her planet, but on her way home, Caliborn messages her through her Astairetop, revealing that Calliope is dead and saying horrible things to her such as talking about how he watches her most private moments through the various screens of his terminal, calling her fat, and implying that her father is dead, making her run off to her house in tears. After Jane engages Trickster Mode, she blasts off from her house and restores half of LOCAH to life, killing multiple skeletal underlings and making them drop units of Zillium Grist.

In the aftermath of GAME OVER, the planet suffered serious damage in its collision with the Land of Heat and Clockwork in the battle between the Condesce and Aranea Serket, with what remained of the planet drifting through Derse's previous orbit before being consumed by the stardust glitches.

Post-retcon, as Aranea's plan never came into fruition, the planet stayed intact, though the plant life has noticeably faded in color, implying that the life restoring effects of Trickster Mode were only temporary. Jasprosesprite^2 takes Jane to LOCAH through a fenestrated wall so that she could meet her pre-scratch counterpart Nannasprite, who talks to Jane about how excited she was to meet her, how proud she is to see her become a heroic young woman who can forge her own destiny, and that she'd be pleased to consider herself Jane's sprite. She also reveals to Jane that due to the retcon, there are now two Nannas, who then throw a pie at her face with such force that sends her skidding through the ground. They then leave LOCAH through one of Jasprose's fenestrated walls to help the kids out on their respective battles in Collide.

  1. Myststuck part 1.HS New words of wisdom from the elders! From Hemera's lips to our slimy amphibious ears. The Nobles will arrive one by one. First to LOCAH, then to LOPAN. Then comes LOTAK, followed by LOMAX. One by one, the Nobles will come, only to discover the remains of those who worshipped them and paved the way for their arrival. But then it is their duty to pave the way for others. For those from the planets through the glass, whatever that means. LOWAS, LOLAR, LOHAC, LOFAF... you know what? That's too many letters. The alphabet confuses me sometimes.
