Wizardy Herbert is a text written by Roxy Lalonde prior to playing Sburb, involving a titular wizard. Excerpts are found on pages 5577HS, 5578HS and 5579HS.

In real life Wizardy Herbert was an unfinished and very flippantly satirical story about kids and magic written by Andrew Hussie himself, many ideas from which later became part of Homestuck. The draft was originally revealed to the public in this thread; however as the file has since been deleted, it can now be found in two parts here and here.

The Complacency of the Learned, characters created by Rose Lalonde within Homestuck, were minor characters in this original Herbert. As illustrations of two Herbert characters appear on the wall of Rose's room, it would appear the characters are also somehow connected within Homestuck; Roxy may have been inspired to write about Herbert by her mother's own bestselling fantasy series.

In Homestuck[]

In at least part of Roxy's Herbert has Beatrix and the protagonist trapped within a far more poorly-written version of their story than the one from which they originated, much like John Egbert's later visit to Caliborn's Homosuck.

Characters[]

Wizardy Herbert[]

Wizardy 2b

The protagonist, a cynical and rather irresponsible person. He has been shown to solve his problems by shooting them with his Beretta, even when he had previously admitted this wasn't the best idea.

Roxy gives Serenity the name twinkly herbertHS in honor of this character. Calliope both takes the form of Twinkly Herbert and uses a single white pistol as a weapon. The pistol's duality as a wand may be inspired by the original Herbert character's nature as a wizard.

Beatrix[]

Wizardy 2a

Herbert's accomplice and the voice of reason to him. Known to be good pals with Russet. She constantly reminds Herbert that it was his own ruleHS to let the story play out the way its supposed to. The book appears to be trying to build romantic tension between her and Herbert.

Beatrix may be named after Beatrix Potter, an author famous for works such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit and who shares a surname with popular wizard character and series Harry Potter.

Russet Clove[]

Russet2

Illustration of Russet by Hussie

A friend of Beatrix's. The book appears to be forcing him into both a heroic role and having a crush on Slinus, although it is unclear how much of this falls within his actual personality. He is, however, shown to be loyal to his teammates, although he later keeps some vital information from them in order to protect Slinus.

Grant Anonama / Slinus Marlevort[]

While outside of the book Herbert became friends with Grant, later inside the book he meets Slinus, the leader of Serpenook, who bears a great resemblance to Grant but is dismissed as essentially "a soulless mannequin dreamt up to recite insipid horseshit". It is later revealed that Grant and Slinus were the same individual as Slinus had also escaped the book and taken the name Grant while in the real world. Despite the villainous nature of his character, he remains quite polite, and called off his team from attacking Russet. His fake name, Grant Anonama, is an anagram for "not an anagram" - which Beatrix realizes after speculating it to be an anagramHS.

In Paradox Space (Dubiously Canon)[]

Lalondian Tourism[]

Kanaya Maryam mistakenly identifiesPXS icon the drawings of Herbert and Beatrix on Rose's wall as Sacred Iconography Displaying The Ancient Gods As The Humans Know Them, with Herbert identified as the one-eyed god Odin and Beatrix as His Counterpart The Leviathan.

Trivia[]

  • The excerpt from Roxy's Wizardy Herbert on page 5577 includes the spelling error HOWVEVER, evoking the typing quirk of Cronus Ampora, another character connected with Harry Potter and other wizards.
