Wizardy Herbert is a text written by Roxy Lalonde prior to playing Sburb. Excerpts are found on pages 5577HS, 5578HS and 5579HS.

In real life Wizardy Herbert was an unfinished and very flippantly satirical story about kids and magic written by Andrew Hussie himself, many ideas from which later became part of Homestuck. The draft was originally revealed to the public in this thread the original file has since been deleted, it can now be read here. The full name of it is Wizardy Herbert and the Mobius Slipknot.

The Complacency of the Learned, characters created by Rose Lalonde within Homestuck, were extremely minor characters in the original Wizardy Herbert. As illustrations of Wizardy Herbert characters appear on the wall of Rose's room; Roxy may have been inspired to write about Herbert by her mother's own bestselling fantasy series.

In Homestuck[]

Roxy's story of the characters features the main protagonists trapped within the story they originated in, albeit written even more poorly due to Roxy's drunk influence. This is later paralleled with John Egbert being stuck inside Caliborn's Homosuck.

Characters[]

Wizardy Herbert[]

Herbert is the main protagonist, in Roxy's story he is shown to be a cynical and rather irresponsible person. In Hussie's original novel, Herbert is hormonal teenage boy who has a personal offense to magic and fun itself. The main plot of the novel starts due to this fact, Herbert’s parents want him to go to a magic summer camp, but they trick him into thinking hes going to an accounting camp instead. His main weapon is a black M9 Beretta pistol. Roxy gives Serenity the name twinkly herbertHS in honor of Herbert. Calliope both takes the form of Twinkly Herbert and uses a single white pistol as a weapon.

Beatrix Tipplepot[]

Beatrix is another main character, she is adventurous and takes curiosity in the strange world around her. She uses a ring with a pink jewel, given to her by her sister, as a way to use magic. She is friends with Herbert and Russet, but she is closer with the latter. In the novel she is first introduced as a romantic interest for Herbert. In Homestuck, the book they’re trapped in seems to be trying to build romantic tension between Beatrix and Herbert as well. Beatrix may be named after Beatrix Potter, an author famous for works such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit and who shares a surname with popular wizard character and series Harry Potter.

Russet Clove[]

Russet2

Illustration of Russet by Hussie.

Russet is another one of the main characters. Russet is implied to have fictionalized bipolar disorder, as he is supposed to take divalproex, but neglects to. He is the main love interest of Beatrix, this causing him to have sort of a rivalry with Herbert. Although, he realizes he is gay and has a crush on Grant halfway through the original novel. In Roxy’s story the book appears to be forcing him into both a heroic role, as well has having a crush on Slinus, a version of Grant. He is shown to be loyal to his teammates, although he later keeps some vital information from them in order to protect Grant.

Grant Anonama[]

Grant is another main character. He acts as an older brother figure to Russet, and is overall very aloof but kind. He uses a sword to fight. Grant is heavy implied to be a younger version of the main villain, Slinus Marlevort. He is only mentioned by name within Roxy’s story. His fake name, Grant Anonama, is an anagram for "not an anagram" - which Beatrix realizes after speculating it to be an anagramHS.

Slinus Marlevort[]

Slinus is the fearless leader of camp Slurpenook, he holds an iron fist on all its campers. The people who work for him are comprised of humanimal-like creatures and skeletons. His weapon is an NES Zapper. Slinus does very evil actions, but is over all pretty laid back with people trying to ruin his evil plans. In Roxy’s text, despite the villainous nature of his character, he remains quite polite, and called off his team from attacking Russet.

In Paradox Space (Dubiously Canon)[]

Lalondian Tourism[]

Kanaya Maryam mistakenly identifiesPXS icon the drawings of Herbert and Beatrix on Rose's wall as Sacred Iconography Displaying The Ancient Gods As The Humans Know Them, with Herbert identified as the one-eyed god Odin and Beatrix as His Counterpart The Leviathan.

Trivia[]

  • The excerpt from Roxy's Wizardy Herbert on page 5577 includes the spelling error HOWVEVER, evoking the typing quirk of Cronus Ampora, another character connected with Harry Potter and other wizards.
